"Relationship Reset" micro-lesson #2

28-Jan-2026

Lesson 2 of 5 powerful NVC micro-lessons - 2026 "Relationship Reset" series

In relationships, a single word can carry a lot of weight. And few words land as heavily as “No.”

For many of us, our "inner Jackal" has been trained to hear that “No” as a personal rejection, or a moralistic judgment.

When a partner, friend, or colleague says “No” to a request, it is never actually about you.

They are saying “Yes” to a vital need of their own - such as rest, autonomy, space, or clarity.

In Nonviolent Communication, we learn that every “No” is actually a “Yes” to a different need. It is an opportunity for empathic connection. When we stop hearing “No” as an attack our nervous system can slow down, moving us from defensiveness towards curiosity.

Try this next time:

When someone says “No” to a dinner plan or a favor, pause before your "Jackal" reacts.

Instead of taking it personally, try gently receiving them empathically by guessing the “Yes” behind their "No.” You might ask:

“Are you saying no because you’re really needing some quiet time and restoration tonight?”
