Conflict in school environments is a global phenomenon and a major problem as misconduct and disruptive behaviour critically impair effective curriculum delivery.
Research has revealed alarming increases in school violence over the past decade backed by disturbing and upsetting statistics.
The need for conflict intervention and non-violent communication in schools is widely recognised; however, the implementation of such solutions has not been adequately applied in South Africa. Despite clear frameworks and disciplinary guidelines as outlined in the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996 and Notice 776 in the Government Gazette dated 15 May 1998, few programmes have been implemented to deal with conflict.
