What is NVC?
Nonviolent Communication (NVC), developed by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, is a powerful process for compassionate connection and action, based on the principles of nonviolence—the natural state of compassion when no violence is present in the heart. NVC helps us express ourselves honestly and clearly while rooted in empathy and understanding in our interactions with others.
NVC is far more than a communication protocol; it is a lens through which we understand ourselves and the world around us. It is a direct bridge to connect from heart to heart, and it offers a journey toward radical self-acceptance. Furthermore, NVC sparks hope about a world where every living being matters and where we resolve conflicts peacefully.
Why is NVC called ‘A Language of the Heart’?
It refers to the common experience that as we learn NVC, we find the way to express ourselves we always longed for, with radical honesty while still in empathic connection with others. It replaces superficial conversations with caring, meaningful exchanges about what matters to us.
More than a way of communication, the power of NVC lies in how regularly practicing it gradually changes our mindset toward ourselves and others. As if given a pair of X-ray glasses, we begin to see the deeper intentions of others and connect with them at a needs level. This approach asks nothing of those we communicate with and offers ease in connecting no matter how we speak to one another.
