# Compassionate Communication for Enlivening Relationships

Relationships can be sources of our deepest meaning and support. They also touch our most vulnerable places. I coach people in their most important relationships, to show up with self-compassion & compassion for others, honesty, and integrity.

For me, Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is not a set of communication skills - it’s a way of living and relating. At its heart, NVC supports us in understanding our feelings, connecting to what’s most important for us & others, and sharing & deciding to promote our foundational needs for connection & interdependence.

As a CNVC Certified Trainer and Relationship Coach, I work primarily with couples and individuals who want to communicate more honestly, understand themselves and each other more deeply, and create relationships with greater connection, compassion, and vitality.

NVC is at the heart of my approach. My work also draws from Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), mindfulness, and practical relationship skills. Special areas of focus for me include:

- welcoming our emotional experiences with the resilience of regulation & co-regulation strategies,
- healing together in relationships, growing in the [core skills of compassionate communication](https://pathwaystoliberation.com/the-matrix/),
- being a regular warm, loving presence when we connect with ourselves (through self-empathy & self-compassion), and
- grounding in the key distinction between what happened and our responses through the skills of observing & noticing patterns in our elaborations.

Through [Couples Focus](https://www.couplesfocus.com), I offer relationship coaching for couples and individuals. I also lead virtual and in-person workshops and practice groups, with in-person programs primarily in the Greater Philadelphia area. Upcoming offerings are listed on my [events calendar](https://robeames.com/events-calendar/).

For those who wish to learn & practice whenever and wherever there’s an internet connection, I offer on-demand courses through [Relational Academy](https://www.relationalacademy.com).

- [Nonviolent Communication Overview Graphic (4 components in 3 modes)](https://robeames.com/nonviolent-communication-overview-modes-and-components/) - Nonviolent Communication (NVC) has 3 modes (Self-Empathy, Empathy, and Honest Self-Expression) consisting of the same 4 components. Below is a handy graphical reference. Download the graphic for your reference & use.
- [Six (6) Categories of Requests](https://robeames.com/6-types-of-requests/) - Requests are powerful. My experience is that fluency in six categories of requests helps in practicing real-time consideration of what to propose. By expanding the ways we ask - for connection, information, understanding, feedback, brainstorming, or action - it helps marry everyone's needs to a specific doable proposal.
- [The U Turn Strategy for shifting out of the 'Blame Game'](https://robeames.com/the-u-turn/) - Instead of what’s wrong with others, the U Turn strategy invites more connection, understanding, & collaboration by refocusing on your experience, needs, & proposals. The "blame game," automatically focuses on what's wrong and who's at fault. Blaming others can contribute to feeling disconnected and powerless. The U Turn offers another path: noticing our judgments, pausing, and turning inward to reconnect with the Needs and Requests that matter most.
