"“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson"

I believe Nonviolent Communication offers more than a set of communication skills—it invites a profound shift in consciousness. At its heart is a way of meeting ourselves and one another with greater curiosity, compassion, and honesty, even in the midst of conflict. I believe this shift has the potential to create deeper understanding and connection in our relationships, our communities, and ultimately, our world.

For more than 20 years, I have taught NVC at the University of California, Stanford University, San Quentin State Prison, and internationally, as well as with nonprofits, businesses, organizations, couples, and individuals. Again and again, I have been moved by what becomes possible when people slow down, listen beneath the words, and discover the feelings, needs, and shared humanity underneath our differences.

In 2006, together with NVC Trainer Jean Morrison, I began designing games, books, and other resources to make these practices more accessible, engaging, and fun. That collaboration grew into GROKtheWORLD, which has now brought NVC-inspired learning to people around the globe, with more than 125,000 books and games sold worldwide.

These days, I am happily semi-retired and delight in a life with a little more spaciousness. I spend much of my time grandparenting the littles, managing Benicia’s community garden, meditating, swimming, traveling, and hiking the beautiful mountains and coastline of Northern California. I also serve on the guiding sangha of Benicia Insight Meditation, my local meditation community.

My own practice continues to evolve. As a longtime meditator and student of trauma healing, I have become increasingly interested in what happens when we bring together NVC, mindfulness, and an understanding of the ways our histories live in our bodies and relationships. I bring these perspectives into my work with an emphasis on presence, compassion, curiosity, and authentic human connection.

Although I teach less and take fewer clients these days, I continue this work because I genuinely love it—and because I continue to learn from my students and clients. I offer occasional workshops and work privately with individuals and couples who want to deepen connection with themselves and one another. I will be one of the trainers at the 2027 IIT in Los Angeles, June 2027.

If you’re interested in working together, please contact me to schedule a consultation.

> “My passion is sharing NVC is whatever capacity I can--be it informally or casually or in a large group. I support families, couples, and individuals who want to transform their relationships into something life-serving and harmonious.”
