ABOUT THE STORY

An exciting read in the spirit of connection and nonviolence. It is a lively page turner without any hint of the 'good guys vs bad guys’ type of story. Humour, sadness, wisdom and many surprises lace through the 150 page story, told in the voice of Zak himself, age 11.

*"I am not exactly a usual boy. And I started being unusual even before I was born. Maybe you are unusual too. I used to think i was the only one but I'm beginning to suspect there are a lot more of us than I ever imagined."*

Born flying Zak's first proper conversation is with a duck. Not fitting in on his first day of school he flies out the window and never goes back. He lives his zany, wonder-full life with his cat and his family . . . until one summer, age 11, he goes to River Island. There he meets Laloune and Sh'krump who lead him into a series of funny, scary and astonishing adventures, through which Zak discovers that reality is full of magic and that even people make good friends.

READER’S COMMENTS

“I have become an instant fan of this story, as it speaks to my own memories of how I experienced life as a child and teen. And also, in my opinion, it is filled to the brim with NVC without ever mentioning it! This, to me, is exquisite! Like 'Ninja-NVC' through story telling. I just love it." - *Kathleen de Laet, CNVC certified trainer, Belgium*

“Zak is a story of considerable interest and value to children and adults alike. It is a kind and human story delivered through the fascinating self-reflection and empathy of Zak, the 11 year old central character. It is highly entertaining, but also beautifully demonstrates the wisdom and ways of respect, acceptance, warmth and humility. I will read it again and again.” - *Hilton Davies, Professor Emeritus, Child Health Psychology, Kings College, London*

“My NVC-practitioner friend asked why I recommended ‘Zak’ for his nephews and nieces. I replied: My 6 year old daughter and I both absolutely loved ‘Zak’. She kept asking me to read her the next chapter, and I could sense a slightly coy, shy air about her that expressed something like, “I see myself in Zak, he’s a bit like me, in my quiet private world”. It was so wonderful and unusual that there was nothing in ‘Zak' that jarred with me - no parts where I wished I could rewrite it a bit to align better with my values. It balances suspense and adventure while offering a reframe around right/wrong thinking. It incorporates magic in a way that is close to what I believe to be ‘true’ magic, and the narrative often goes into stream of consciousness writing that I find accurately represents the way I think many children (myself for sure, and my daughter too, it turns out), quietly think. I appreciate so much there being a book out there that I can read to my kids with a full sense of coherence with my values.” - *Gina Seilern, NVC trainer, UK*

“I was delighted with Zak. He makes magic very real and ordinary. He gives it being and makes it come alive. He brings hope to find that magic in my own life.” - *Fr. Chris Rajendram, CNVC certified trainer, Sri Lanka*

"Zak is an introduction to a whole new way of life, of cultivating awareness and tapping in to the powerful, creative inner self. It’s listening to silence with pleasure, and feeling empathy non-verbally. It encourages children to feel things for themselves and to be aware of their inner potentials, regardless of the assumptions and put-downs of others. It is a wholly healing book." - *Margaret Harrison, author of ‘Angels on Roller Skates’.*

“ZAK" is more than just a lovely children's story. Zak tells about respect for nature, people and all living beings, about enjoying one's own particularity, the diversity of the other, and the sense of belonging.
