I am **Ángeles Gordillo**, and I want to tell you a personal story. Are you ready? It all began four years ago with a performing arts research grant. I wanted to work with invisible, normalized forms of violence that create unmet needs, pain, discomfort… I started by exploring the distinction between habitual and natural in the context of stories and narratives surrounding the process of menopause. We want to open a community conversation that considers menstruating bodies in their entirety, moving beyond generic stories and working with autobiographical ones drawn from personal history. We are interested in experiences that, when expressed in the collective space, resonate and are recognized. **We bring the small, the everyday, the subtle, the poetic, and the autobiographical into scenic creation.** ![The artist seated with a hand on her belly, wrapped in red thread](https://www.cnvc.org/images/news/Giraffes%20Around%20The%20World/hovo/hovo-artist.jpg) A moment from the creative process. ![Participants sitting face to face, reading written words to one another](https://www.cnvc.org/images/news/Giraffes%20Around%20The%20World/hovo/hovo-face-to-face.jpg) Sharing and listening, face to face. ## From awareness-raising to collective creative process and public presentations The project develops participatory artistic processes in different towns across Catalonia, bringing together women and people who menstruate to explore their experiences of inhabiting menstruating bodies through three main activities. 1**Awareness-raising and dialogue sessions** in public healthcare centers, addressing the lack of research on menstruating bodies and creating spaces for reflection and exchange with healthcare professionals. 2**A collective creative process** with a group of women and people who menstruate, in which participants share their experiences, challenge stereotypes and labels, and develop new narratives through facilitated sessions, empathic listening, dialogue, and collaborative artistic creation. 3**Public presentations of the artistic work,** shared with participants’ families and local residents. Each presentation concludes with a dialogue circle involving audience members, participating women, healthcare professionals from the local health center, and social workers. The project is also deeply connected to NVC in the way we approach the collective creation process. The combination of sessions with healthcare professionals and a community theatre creation process fostered learning, mutual support and the creation of a space of trust among participants. The final performance and subsequent discussion demonstrated the project’s value in generating reflection, raising visibility around the menopause and helping to challenge stereotypes.”— Dolors Molina, Councillor for Equality, Ajuntament de La Bisbal ## The menopausal transition We develop community-based performing arts projects that connect art, health, and community to raise visibility of menopause. Through collective creative processes, we transform the experiences of women and people who menstruate into artistic work that generates new narratives, fosters dialogue between communities and healthcare professionals, and helps build a more diverse, dignified, and community-centered understanding of this stage of life. We use NVC, artistic and performance language to talk about this menopause, with the desire to: - Contribute to establishing the sexual rights of women and people who menstruate. - Collect and provide precise information on the changes that bodies experience, on a physical, mental, and emotional level, during this vital process. - Create community spaces where we can break myths and find care tools for the climacteric period. - Create collective knowledge about menopause and open the dialogue about female cycles to a community dimension. The project connects with diverse community groups, from public healthcare professionals to women and people who menstruate at risk of social exclusion, their families, and residents of the towns where the project takes place. > “We feel useful in sharing something that can help with the experiences that come afterward.”— Anna Gómez, participant ## Do you resonate?
