Volunteer Position Open: Translation Circle Coordinator

Role Description: CNVC Translation Circle Coordinator

Reports to Communication Coordinator, who is included in the Translation Circle

Purpose: To serve as coordinator of the CNVC Translation Circle, which includes the CNVC Communication Coordinator and representatives of translators who participate in the CNVC Translation System. 

The purpose of the Translation Circle is to develop and maintain the conditions necessary to support:

  • Translation of CNVC Governance documents (including web pages) from English into other languages used in the NVC Community,
  • Translation into English of feedback provided to CNVC Governance Teams on feedback forms in languages other than English,
  • Interpretation (i.e., "live" translation) as needed during CNVC Board meetings; Extended Leadership Team Forum meetings; GCC meetings; and meetings involving the Admin Team and members of the NVC Global Network.
  • Other translation activities as may be mutually agreed upon between CNVC Governance and the Translation Circle.

The conditions necessary to support these activities are anticipated to include shared technology tools; people willing to serve translators and reviewers; training of translators, reviewers, language-area coordinators and CNVC Governance Team members; shared agreements among all those participating in the system; and documentation of circle policies and operating procedures.

CNVC Translation System:

The basics of a system to support the above translation activities have been developed, reviewed and approved (see list of approvers below) and are starting to be implemented.

Glenda Mattinson (as Communication Coordinator and GCC Coordinator)
Irmtraud Kauschat (GCC Member and German-language Translation Coordinator)
Margo A Pair (Administrative Director)

Translation Circle Policy (to date):

  • Ownership of all translated documents will reside with CNVC.
  • After translation, all documents will be reviewed by a reviewer before the requesting CNVC Governance team is told that the translation is complete.
  • Other policies, including decisions about distribution of funds, will be made by the Translation Circle.
  • The Translation Circle will be composed of the Translation Circle Coordinator, the CNVC Communication Coordinator and representatives of translators who perform the types of translation outlined in the aim above.
  • Each language area will have the option to select a coordinator and a representative to the Translation Circle.
  • The initial coordinators will be appointed by the Translation Circle Coordinator, until such time as the language circles are ready to make their own appointments. Anne Bourrit and Irmtraud Kauschat have agreed to serve as the initial coordinators of the French and German translation teams.

CNVC is intending to establish a "Translation Project" soon, to which members of the NVC Community can donate funds to support CNVC translation activities. As outlined above, the Translation Circle will make policy decisions about distribution of any donated funds.

Skills:

  • Well integrated NVC skills and consciousness (including group facilitation), CNVC Certified Trainer preferred
  • Demonstrated skill in written and verbal communication in English
  • Organizational experience and background in a variety of information systems
  • The following skills are preferred but not required:
    - Experience operating in an organizational context in which translation was used
    - Knowledge of one or more additional languages
    - Translation or interpretation ("live" translation) experience
