Trainers: Katherine Singer

Transitional Lead Trainer - Katherine Singer
Having experienced the Korean War at the age of 5, Katherine has felt a deep commitment towards bringing about a world that is peaceful both within and without, by resolving conflicts in a peaceful manner. In 1970, she immigrated to the United States, and, in 1997, met Marshall. Later, she became a trainer, then served the CNVC as a board member, and now serves  as an assessor.

Katherine introduced NVC to South Korea in 2003, subsequently founding the Korean Center for NVC in 2006. Now, aided by 4 full-time staff, 12 [yet to be certified] trainers, and many volunteers, she is now serving all areas of South Korean society. With John Kinyon, Katherine is currently organizing and supporting a team of NVC mediators in hopes of contributing, someday peacefully resolving the conflicts between North and South Korea.

Dow GordonSupport Trainer - Dow Gordon
Dow writes: While in prison, I stepped onto a spiritual path (mindfulness).  Over time this self-awareness and centering practice allowed me to begin seeing who I really am, rather than the ‘bad-ass’ criminal I thought I was.  In 1999 in a Washington state prison, Lucy Leu introduced me to NVC.  From the beginning, NVC has expanded and enhanced my connection to myself and others.  The consciousness which energizes and underpins NVC has transformed my life.  NVC and mindfulness practice enable me to contribute to and share in a world I never imagined existed -- a homeland where I am free to embrace all of who I am and experience an enduring gratitude for my human family.  I believe that it is within that ‘spiritual space’ which NVC points us toward, where training with NVC becomes most inspiring.  When I experience an enhanced sense of safety, acceptance and inclusion, it’s much easier to connect with the consciousness of NVC, rather than simply the intellectual model.  After years working with Freedom Project sharing NVC & mindfulness in prisons, I’m now taking all I’ve learned working with prisoners and communities, and offering these skills to other marginalized populations.  While continuing my commitment to work in prisons and local communities, I currently lead a Spanish training team in Guatemala working with Mercy Corps, an international food-relief organization.  Our Spanish team, Conectando con la Vida, offers NVC and self-awareness skills training for Mercy Corps staff and field workers engaged in nutrition support projects for indigenous peoples in Guatemala.

Christine King

Support Trainer— Christine King
Christine writes: Discovering NVC was a pivotal point in my life. Suddenly, my entire worldview fell into place—my lifelong interest in politics and justice, self-transformation, and meditation. Since graduate school, I have made a career in education—as a teacher, administrator, and perpetual student. I bring openness, curiosity, passion, and the joy of learning to this work. In 2002, I co-founded NVC Santa Cruz with CNVC trainer Jean Morrison and we hosted three community trainings with Marshall Rosenberg over the course of four years. Jean and I have developed: NVC card games Grok, a facilitator’s manual Grokit, and NVC primer Communication FUNdamentals for fun, connection and play. Currently I am: piloting a program teaching NVC at a UC Santa Cruz residence hall; bringing Dominic Barter’s Restorative Circle work to my community; and teaching Transformative Action to 70 UCSC students. For me, NVC is the manifestation of love, pure and simple—love for humanity, the planet and all of its inhabitants. I look forward to sharing my passion and supporting others in their learning process during June’s IIT.

Martha Lasley ImageSupport Trainer - Martha Lasley
