Conflict Resolution

Building a Compassionate Justice System: An Introduction to Restorative Circles with Dominic Barter

Date:
2009-11-14 09:00 - 2009-11-15 17:00
Course Description:

Restorative Circles offer ways for individuals, families, groups and communities to establish connection, discover meaning and recover power on profound levels. They create a forum for connecting empathically across differences and reaching agreements that support safety and well-being, both personally and within society.

This systemic approach guides communities in choosing how they would like to respond to future conflict – proactively preventing or diminishing harm – while also giving participants a real-life experience of the practical power of nonviolence to seed understanding and change in challenging contexts.

Developed in the shanty towns, schools, courts and prisons of urban Brazil, Restorative Circles are being used in a wide variety of contexts and countries, where creating the conditions for social justice, group cohesion, resilient relationships and personal healing are recognized as interconnected and vital.

The Circles support dialogue rooted in open-hearted clarity and tangible power-sharing - calling us to rethink our view of and response to living with others, while engaging with the challenge of consciously strengthening community well-being. The results open up revolutionary possibilities for furthering a culture of peace.

In these dynamic two days, Dominic Barter will present the evolution and practice of this work, and its application to diverse areas of our personal and collective lives. Through hands-on exploration of key concepts, grounded in a step-by-step process and illustrated by real world examples, we’ll apply the learning to participants’ issues and increase our ability to see and act from our shared humanity. Finally, we’ll rehearse the development of this new resource in a community of which we are part.

This event will be filmed; you will have the choice to not appear on the videotape.

Dominic Barter began developing restorative practices and systems in the mid 1990s, inspired by the social complexity of Rio de Janeiro, his adopted home, and his study with Marshall Rosenberg in Nonviolent Communication. Since 2004 he has been the training program director and consultant to the Brazilian Justice Department’s Restorative Justice pilot projects, in collaboration with UNDP, UNESCO, the Special Secretariat for Human Rights, local communities and State Secretaries for Education. In 2008 Dominic was a keynote speaker at the International Conference on Restorative Practices. He coordinates the Restorative Justice Project for the international Center for Nonviolent Communication.

Buildinga Compassionate Conflict Resolution System!

Restorative Circles allow individuals and communities to establish connection, discover meaning and recover power on profound levels. They create a forum for reaching agreements that help sustain effective and nurturing relationships both personally and within society.

Circles have developed within the RJ (Restorative Justice) movement, which in recent decades has adapted ways for communities to promote responsibility and healing. Rethinking justice, and engaging to consciously build whole-system responses to people’s well-being, has opened up revolutionary possibilities for furthering a culture of peace.

Dominic Barter, the certified trainer in charge of the RJ project for the Center for NVC, has created a wonderfully empowering & sustainable restorative process!

Restorative Circle Training

October 5th,the first evening, is gratis and open to all friends & families: an intro to 5 pre-requisites for creating RC in communities.

The next 3 days dynamically explore the key assumptions underlying the RC model which Dominic Barter has been sharing all over Brazil for years.

Participants may experience loosening of closed ideas, uncovering of human motives behind painful choices and discovery of effective strategies to meet pressing needs. They will partake first-hand in the RC process, withstep-by-step integration of both RC & NVC skills.

NVC is a skill which affirms that we,human beings, share common, universal values (such as needs for community and respect), as well as a desire to see these needs met.

By focusing on these shared values, and then moving on to strategies, there can be found solutions which are more satisfying, empowering and sustainable.

NVC is based on the premise that each of us can access our remarkable inner resources if we are given empathy, and that we all fare much better if we know how to do this in collaboration.

people circling globe

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATING COMPASSIONATELY:  More than just a luxury in ordinary times, Compassionate Communication skills are more important than ever in our rapidly changing world.

As leaders across the globe scramble to address a wide variety of economic problems, national security issues and natural resource shortages, one constant exists -- in order for any solution to be lasting, it requires people to collaborate, communicate, and act in partnership.

Compassionate Communication provides the relational skills, as well as ways of thinking and being, that support us in making the transition from a domination-style style system ("either/or" paradigm) to a
partnership approach ("both/and" paradigm).

NVC is much more than a communication process -- it is a way of life that can be applied in any situation to bring about more peace, harmony and mutual respect... that can resolve any conflict to everyone's satisfaction.

WHAT IS NONVIOLENT COMMUNICATION?

NVC is both a spiritual practice that helps us see our common humanity, and a concrete set of skills which help us to live more peacefully. These skills apply to thought, language, and using our power in a way that honors everyone's needs.

NVC is a learnable process for creating emotional freedom, self-acceptance, inner peace, and fulfilling relationships. It involves expressing ourselves honestly, listening with empathy, and developing a more compassionate inner relationship.  People around the world are using NVC skills to transform conflict, create harmony in their relationships, and build a world where everyone's needs are honored through compassionate giving, and without the use of coercion or violence.

grasping hands

NVC was created by clinical psychologist and international peacemaker Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, who has taught NVC in more than 35 countries around the world, and whose work is supported and promoted by the global Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC).

NVC helps people to:
* speak in a way that inspires compassion and understanding
* initiate difficult conversations with more ease and confidence
* remain centered and peaceful while hearing difficult messages
* express anger fully, safely and respectfully - yet powerfully
* shift patterns of thinking that lead to depression, guilt, shame
* enliven yourself by expressing and receiving gratitude
* translate criticism, judgments and blame into life-serving messages
* resolve long-standing conflicts and heal painful relationships
* inspire others to change their behavior willingly
