Auroville NVC Camp

Auroville NVC Camp

Sociocracy is a method of governance that supports
“power-with” (rather than “power-over”). It is a process for collective
decision-making that makes sure that everyone’s voice gets heard. It
also supports the flow of information and decision-making in
organizations which value ‘equivalence’ (valuing each member equally in
decisions).

This Sociocratic-Style Facilitation Training is part of the NVC Camp and introduces the consent-based process known as ‘Sociocracy’ that has been adopted by the NVC network worldwide.

Inspiration and Heartbreak in my Visit to Brazil and Africa

In 1990, I saw a spray-painted message on a board in Berkeley: "American Dream; African Nightmare." These words have haunted me ever since. In April-May this year (2008) I had a chance to experience for myself some of the African nightmare as I visited South Africa for a day and then Ghana for 12 days. I am sitting here, still in Ghana, trying to capture what I have experienced, and words are failing me. To speak of poverty, I would not capture the extraordinary human dignity, ingenuity, and creative aliveness of the people I have met and the many, many more I have seen, who manage to survive and make life happen in conditions I know I would not be able to endure, and I would not capture the thick veil of the legacy of colonialism, which continues to leave people doubting their capacity to do things fully for themselves. The juxtaposition of all of this is what I am sitting here, heartbroken and inspired, with my daily experience for the entire time since I landed in this continent.

Martin Luther King Jr. observed that, “You have no influence over people who can sense
your underlying contempt.” Yet how can we be free of contempt when we’re certain
the beliefs and actions of another group or person are harmful and “wrong”? In this workshop, drawing on the principles of Nonviolent Communication, we will begin to explore how we can “speak truth to power” in a way that others can hear us---even
when they may have opposing views we find inaccurate, harmful, and challenging.

Requested Contribution: Sliding Scale: $20 - $40.

Woman’s Project in Nagpur, India

Background

We started this project because of the high rate of domestic violence that is still happening to women in India. According to the 2002 study, 45 percent of Indian women are slapped, kicked or beaten by their husbands. India also had the highest rate of violence during pregnancy. Of the women reporting violence, 50 percent were kicked, beaten or hit when pregnant. About 74.8 percent of the women who reported violence have attempted to commit suicide.
Domestic violence experts say the problem in India stems from a cultural bias against women who challenge their husband's right to control their behavior. Women who do this -- even by asking for household money or stepping out of the house without their permission -- are seen as punishable. This process leads men to believe their notion of masculinity and manhood is reflected to the degree to which they control their wives.
