Dear Community, Robert Gonzales, Margo Pair, Valentina Rosenberg, and myself discussed in a meeting that some of you were not aware that within my role as Director of Educational Services, I at times serve as an assessor of trainers and assessors. I usually serve as an assessor in developing countries for the certification process. I also serve as assessor with people with whom I have had the opportunity to work with extensively. Please note this happens rarely and only when I feel it is needed based on circumstances. In each case when someone is interested in becoming a certified trainer or an assessor, please refer to our webpage. Warmly, Marshall Rosenberg

Dear Certification Candidates and NVC Community, With joy, we wish to share our plan to proceed in reopening the CNVC Certification Program. Throughout the past year we have heard your curiosity and eagerness for information, along with some pain and frustration at not receiving it. We hope that by sharing this information, we are beginning to offer you some of the inclusion, clarity and hope that you have wanting from us.
Warmly,Marshall, Margo & Valentina, Admin. TeamRita Herzog, for the Trainer Certification Team Robert Gonzales, Board President
February 1, 2008 Dear Community, As we review CNVC’s Certification Program, we have taken into consideration diverse comments and viewpoints from those intimate with the process. We see how alive learning NVC is for all; we see our certification program fulfilling a need to support and nurture each individual as they welcome NVC into not only their life but into the world. In wanting to share with you a glimpse at the road we are walking in trying to think through the Certification process, please know that we found ourselves surprised at how much deeper this is taking us than we ever expected, at how rethinking the Certification process is leading us into the possibility of different paths than what we would have thought. The emphasis in this evaluation of the Certification process has not been on the strategy to have people certified or the date to re-open certification; instead our focus has been on the integrity behind the training people are receiving. Are we providing training that demonstrates the consciousness of NVC? As most of you know, in the “business world”, it is common for programs or procedures to be reviewed, revised, updated. The programs are improved into something more efficient, something better. With any live process (such as NVC) doing the same thing can be beneficial - trying to prune away the procedures that do not work, trying to implement what does work. This is a normal process in the effort to achieve and grow.We have been wrestling with the balance between the need to ensure the integrity of NVC – of who is teaching it and how it is being taught, and the need to see NVC demonstrated in the lives of the trainers with the need for consistency in standards to ensure the above two needs. This requires a great deal of heart searching to find the balance. We are aware that we need more assessors world-wide and are working on this evolution of the new assessor training. Please know that we have considered the input from each of you. We, too, feel the sense of urgency and need to have this resolved and to have a date when Certification will re-open. And please know that we are diligently working towards this goal. As we announced, we planned to be able to provide this date by now. We are realizing we’re not ready to do so, and we regret the confusion and deep frustration that many of you have been feeling. We ask for your continued support as we address this intricate and important process of how NVC is shared in the world. Warmly, July 28, 2007 Dear Community, We’d like to share some thoughts that have developed in recent meetings regarding the Certification Process. CNVC is progressing toward building a structure that fosters connection within the NVC community and supports our shared vision and mission. Our aim is for all current and future candidates and Certified Trainers to work in a way that is in alignment with CNVC’s mission for social change. A clear description of what Social Change means along with how to implement this as a requirement is being developed. In the meantime, we would like you to consider the following question: Have you listened to your heart, where does your passion and knowledge of NVC lead you? We hope this is a question alive within you. Another aspect being discussed is our desire for all candidates and certified trainers to be connected with a community or circle that is a part of CNVC, and working in harmony with our mission. During this period of transition your open-mindedness is appreciated. Warmly, Rita Herzog, Margo Pair June 2, 2007 We are in the process of modifying the certification process, to better serve needs for clarity and connection. Meetings have taken place, and are scheduled to take place with the intention to get clarity about how local circles, and their missions, will be tied in with what new trainers want to do. A private intensive training is scheduled to be held in Germany at the end of June to facilitate this connection. We are inviting Certification team members to provide feedback about what has been working, and what has not been working in regards to the current process of certification. We hope to have more information on the status of our progress in the beginning of July. Thank you for your patience and understanding, during this period of transitional collaboration. Warmly, Marshall Rosenberg, Valentina Rosenberg & Margo Pair March 16, 2007 Marshall and Valentina request all trainer assessments and new registrations be temporarily suspended until we have clarified how to build into assessments a measure of how each Candidate will contribute to the mission and aims of CNVC. We would like the current assessment team and the other members of the LT, as well as interested Certified Trainers, to make suggestions about how to accomplish this within 30 days. We recommend no new assessments until we have reached clarity about how to integrate this new element into CNVC's assessment procedure. Would you be willing to address your ideas to Jim Manske @ cnvcgcc@gmail.com? We will prepare a report of all of our recommendations within 60 days. We would also like the LT to write a letter to current Registered Certification Candidates explaining this decision to them and requesting their patience and to consider how they would like to contribute to CNVC's mission. We would also want to communicate this decision to our Trainer team in order to support mutual clarity and connection. Candidates that have completed their Assessment as of March 16, 2007 will be able to continue their process toward Certification. Warmly, Marshall and Valentina |

An Introduction to the Certification Process
We appreciate your interest in the procedures for becoming a certified trainer with The Center for Nonviolent Communication, and trust that what follows will meet your need for information.
the purposes for cnvc trainer certification
CNVC is committed to a vision of a critical mass of people using Nonviolent Communication (NVC) throughout the world. A strong community of qualified trainers will play an important role in the realization of this goal.
As you consider your decision to start on the path toward certification, we would like you to appreciate that the registration coordinators and assessors have the clear intention to carry out their roles in a spirit of mutual respect and shared power. We share the challenge with you to engage in an assessment process within a new paradigm of partnership and "power with", rather than domination and "power over." We all have choice to interpret the certification process as coming from a domination perspective or to see it as an opportunity for partnership.
Many candidates who become aware of this choice and are able to integrate its meaning, have found transformative learning for themselves in the process. As assessors, we are constantly learning how to better contribute to a mutual process that meets everyone's needs.
We want to emphasize that the Center has a unique perspective in offering certification, and that may be different from the assumptions some candidates start with. For CNVC, certification is a validation and celebration of a new colleague joining our community. It is not a permanent credential like a diploma, but needs be renewed each year to stay in effect. In essence, it is an annual renewal of your commitment to the organization.
CNVC has two long-term goals for the certification process. One is to ensure that the next generation and succeeding generations are taught NVC in a way that preserves and protects the integrity of the NVC process. The second is to create a community of trainers who want to work with CNVC to fulfill our vision.
Certification candidates have expressed the following goals: connection to CNVC, contribution to our vision, credibility, mutual support, and personal growth.
An Overview
Whether or not you decide to pursue CNVC certification, we hope that your enthusiasm for spreading and sharing NVC will continue. The “Guidelines for Sharing NVC for Individuals Who Are Not CNVC-Certified Trainers” is offered for your information. We request that you follow these guidelines, or contact your certification coordinator for further discussion.
We are also providing you with the current CNVC Certified Trainers Agreement, so you can familiarize yourself with the guidelines that you will be asked to agree to, at the time of your pre-assessment.
We would like our certified trainers to have (1) a strong grounding in NVC consciousness (which includes social change, spirituality, and community components), (2) a deep understanding of the NVC process, and (3) proficient teaching skills, as well as a willingness to continue to grow in all these areas. To that end, we require of candidates at least a year of teaching NVC as a non-certified trainer, leading practice groups, working with at least three different certified trainers for guidance, along with training logs and personal NVC journals to chart progress and learnings. This will demonstrate your deepening in all three areas over a period of time.
The path to CNVC certification has three phases:
(I) registration
(II) pre-assessment
(III) assessment
Anyone wishing to pursue the path to certification is requested to start with (I) and complete each of the three phases, in sequence. The detailed procedures are described in the Certification Preparation Packet.
To administer and oversee this program, CNVC has appointed four registration coordinators: Susan Skye will work with trainer candidates in North and South America, Towe Widstrand will work with those in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, Saleem Ebrahim for French-speakers, and Markus Sikor for German-speakers. (See contact information below.) The registration coordinators will receive initial registration applications and, once a person has been accepted as a trainer candidate, will provide information for next steps.
The Certification Preparation Packet of materials is designed to support candidates in deepening their NVC consciousness, skills, and understanding. These materials are also designed to help candidates determine their own readiness for a pre-assessment session. The packet includes information about additional fees to be paid directly to the assessor and about the completed certification fee to CNVC.
We expect these materials to be revised periodically, as we hear from all of you as to what is working well, and what is not. The current document is not a promise we are locked into. Program designs change over time -- it is a sign of growth and ongoing development -- in order to adapt to the needs of the organization and all of its members. Please check every few months for updates.
We recognize that applying for certification is a serious commitment. If you would like further information regarding the certification process, please contact the registration coordinator for your area, after reading the entire Certification Preparation Packet.
Please include your full name, home and work phone numbers, street and email addresses on all correspondence.
We look forward to hearing from you.
